It seems as though every other month the news is alerting us about a possible breach of online security. Whether it is through a credit card machine or through a website, we are constantly hearing about hackers gaining access to our information, but are very seldom told how this occurs. With so much of our personal and private information placed online, it is important to gain an understanding of how hackers are able to access are data.
Honey Traps
This type of hack occurs when an individual hackers asks to use your physical computer for a number of different reasons. While you may think they are harmless and only trying to help, they are really about to use a physical USB key to access information from your hard drive.
Default Passwords
With many equipment or accounts that requires a password, a default password is provided for the user. These passwords are typically very generic and easy to guess. When users forget to change these default passwords, they are providing a perfect opportunity for hackers to access their information.
Sniffing
This occurs when hackers are able to install a sniffing device to your computer in order to access passwords stored on the device. While you may think a password is enough to protect your PC, hackers can still able to access your computer to install the device.
Fraudulent Support
Some hackers will prey on companies and individuals who are not as knowing as others within the IT community. They will call these establishments and individuals posing as IT support, when really they are using this opportunity to access your information.
Phishing
This occurs when hackers attempt to lure individuals to a website where questions are asked. The questions are meant to “validate” information while you are actually giving information to hackers. To find out more, read our previous blog discussing phishing.
