- Long Beach, California was the first U.S. city to send telephone traffic through fiber optic cabling in 1977. The telephone traffic was sent through first-generation fiber optics at 6 Mbit/s.
- In 2011, 19.2 million miles of fiber optic cabling was installed in homes in the United States alone. That’s enough to wrap around the world 772 times!
- By 2012, 21.3 million North American homes had fiber-to-the-home services, which is more than double the number of homes in Texas!
- Fiber optic cabling in the home adds an estimated $5,000 to a home’s value.
- The largest, privately-owned fiber optic network in the world is being built in Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It will connect 265 buildings and 13,000 computer network ports!
- Verizon is the nation’s largest fiber-to-the-home service provider. As of 2013, Verizon has wired around 18 million homes with fiber technology!
- In China, all new residences must be wired with fiber technology.
