When implementing fiber between facilities, careful planning is key. An important factor in this process is choosing your type of installation. Will you choose buried fiber deployments or aerial fiber deployments? Each system has its own special pros and cons. The natural terrain and surrounding environment will have a big role in which type you choose.
Aerial Fiber Deployments
Aerial fiber deployments are one of the most cost-effective methods of installing fiber cables. Rather than digging up roads, operators can simply use existing pole infrastructure to deploy the cables.
The downside of aerial fiber deployments is that, because it is so fragile, it must be heavily insulated to protect against damage from weather, extreme wind, and even birds. If poles and cable need to be made stronger, it will impact cost and time. In urban areas, taking the extra time to strengthen cables and poles can often create issues with local planning authorities. This makes aerial fiber deployments more suited to existing pole networks in rural areas that don’t have the same restrictions that urban ones do.
Buried Fiber Deployments
Buried fiber deployments, unlike aerial, are protected from weather damage by being buried below the freezing point in the ground. This makes buried fiber deployments more reliable than aerial fiber deployments in areas that experience extreme winter weather.
However, this cable has to be buried deep in the ground to protect it from damages, which can be costly. Unforeseen obstacles, like unearthed tree roots, can dramatically add to the time and costs of a project. Plus, if a buried fiber cable is damaged, it’s difficult to repair. However, if you are in an urban environment, this may be the better choice in terms of planning and following local regulations.
