Some industry trackers are estimating the adoption of Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to double or even triple by 2017. This is due to the constantly rising bandwidth requirements and quality of service expectations. In order to keep up with demand while also reigning in costs, the wireless industry is exploring a variety of different service delivery models. One of these models that has proven successful is neutral host DAS.
What is Neutral Host DAS?
Neutral host DAS has proven to be a widely successful and popular model of service delivery. This is because it shifts the ownership of the system away from the carrier. Instead, a building owner, DAS integrator, or third-party system provider is responsible for the ownership of the system. This means that the independent, third-party host assumes all financial, regulatory, legal, and technical responsibility, including the responsibility for the deployment, installation, and maintenance of the system. The host who owns the system can then lease access to the system to one or more operators.
There are several benefits to this model of service delivery:
- More end-users: Rather than having to roam, more end-users can utilize the carrier’s network.
- Third party ownership: Having the system owned and managed by a third party means that no carrier will have an unfair advantage.
- More solutions to demand: Venue owners, DAS integrators, and even DAS suppliers can act as neutral hosts. This means that there are more neutral hosts to answer the growing demand of the market.
