We’ve talked about sound masking in relation to SCIFs before but today we want to take a more in-depth look at what exactly sound masking is and how it is being used. Sound masking is when additional background noises are used to cover up things like human speech or other sounds in an environment, which can be a benefit either for security or to make a more comfortable and relaxing work environment. Let’s take a look at what makes sound masking so effective and what potential applications it may have.
How Does Sound Masking Work?
Sound masking is meant to help normalize sound levels, creating a space where things like conversations or the clacking of keyboards doesn’t stand out anymore. When working in a quiet place, any sound stands out–but when there are subtle ambient sounds pumped into the space, it makes those sounds stand out far less. It’s an effective method of cutting down on distractions or even, in some scenarios, preventing someone from overhearing conversations about sensitive content.
Where is it Applicable?
Sound masking has been utilized for specialty situations like in some SCIFs before to provide an extra sense of security, but they’re also used in offices, hospitals (think HIPPA) and public spaces. Open offices may be either too loud or too quiet, making it impossible for employees to be productive. Sound masking is an effective solution in normalizing sound levels to make the office an enjoyable, confidential and productive space to be in. Some public spaces, like waiting rooms, hospitals, or banks, can also benefit from sound masking systems that can help increase a sense of privacy when discussing sensitive information.
What Systems Work?
There are a number of different ambient sounds that can be effective means of sound masking, from HVAC sounds to instrumental background music. Still, the best kinds of systems are the ones you don’t notice. The less obtrusive a sound masking system is, the more effective it is. We can show you how!
