Video Badging — A Visual Form of Security

Video Badging

Video badging is an effective way of controlling who can go where in your facility.

A video badging solution is a system comprised of a few simple elements to create a much more secure area. Using a CCTV camera, a computer with video badging software and a photo ID card printer, you can capture even more data about your Access Control cardholders and provide manned guard checkpoints with additional recognition of those allowed entry to secure locations. Often today, the video badge is actually printed on the Access Control proximity card, creating an image along with the card being read.  These systems capture the badge-holders facial image that can later be used to identify a person in video recordings, and even provide data for biometric facial recognition systems, an enhanced form of advanced security.

Benefits of Video Badges

The obvious major benefit of video badges is that they allow for us to combine visual identification along with electronic identification. Custom ID Badge templates allow for the use of the badge perimeter space to identify levels of clearance, departments, and divisions of a company and even affiliation with a group.  For example, the Labor & Delivery section of a hospital may have a unique color background to give quick and immediate reference that the holder is OK to be in the L&D ward. Access control systems such as this reduce the need for costly security personnel while still ensuring that the area is safe and secure.

Creating Pathways

When working with video badging systems, it’s critical that we consider the pathways of those who will be impacted by this new access control setup. What that means is that it must be clear who is able to access what locations. For example, some badges could carry a Red Level security clearance and signs posted around the facility could reflect that. This prevents confusion over what areas are accessible by who.

Who Can Benefit?

Video badging systems are ideal for any facility that hosts a diverse group of personnel and needs to limit access to certain individuals while not prohibiting the movement of others. It’s a cost-effective method that is perfect for hospitals, schools, and government facilities.
